Sherry's story - update

I met Sherry today, a chubby cheerful young lady. Looking at her, you would find no traces of abuse. She does not carry on her the weight of the hard luck life has thrown her way. In her eyes I could see honesty, I saw someone who wanted so much out of life but got a totally different package. I was in the company of a friend who also had a few questions for Sherry.

The meeting further ascertained the authenticity of Sherry's  story.

It was Sherry who begged to stay with Upjohn when he told her mum that he would take care of her.  She was excited to be pregnant for the only man she ever knew intimately and loved.

Sherry's father did try to take her daughter back forcefully and even got the police involved but she was adamant. She was blinded by love. In my opinion, this justified her father's anger and refusal then to set his eyes on her ever again.

He felt humiliated by his first child who rejected the love of family and chose to live with a total stranger at such a young age.

Upjohn made her wear a wedding band so people would think that they were legally married. Why? Because he was a man of God and had a reputation to protect. The first time she said hello to a neighbour on their way to church, he made them go back home and he beat her severely for speaking to someone.

Sherry never knew that she was being abused and believed Upjohn beat her just to correct her until she got a smart phone and joined an all female group on social media.  Then she began to read and learn of domestic violence.

She just saw her mother again a few days ago for the first time since 2004. Her mother visited her old house five times in search of her before she finally gave up the search for her daughter.

Another striking thing about Sherry is that she speaks very reasonably good English for someone with no university education. Guess who taught her, Upjohn, he was an English teacher. He taught her not out of love but by making a jest of her whenever she spoke wrong English.  It paid off.

We also met her daughter who wears very thick glasses for her age. Sherry presented some of the test results and prescription drugs. She still has a series of tests to undergo before the surgery is carried out.

So far, there's a donation sum of one hundred thousand naira for Sherry's daughter's medical and welfare. The test alone will cost sixty four thousand naira.

When we met Sherry and her daughter today at about 1pm, they had not had any food for the day and not sure if they would find anything to eat. She said that they had gotten used to not eating in a whole day.

In all that this lady had gone through, she still loves to have a good laugh. When she was asked to give her daughter a treat by taking her to a fastfood, she said she hopes her daughter doesn't pass out from the excitement.  Lol

There's a sustainability plan for Sherry and more donations are needed.

  1. You'd be amazed the number of women suffering Domestic violence, and a small percentage of men too. Victims need to know they're not alone and speak up or talk to somebody. You don't have to suffer in silence. Tell Sherry that she's taken the first step in getting help which is usually the hardest, by talking about it
