Dolly

Friends are like boobs. Some are big, some are small, some are real and some are fake – author unknown
Ife became friends with Dolly in her first year in the University, she was a typical silver spoon kid who had had it all going for her.

Tall, shapy, smart and beautiful; Ife was a total package and to crown it all she was very humble and wouldn’t say or do anything to show that she had wealthy parents.

She met Dolly in class on the first day of school as they went through their registration process, they got talking and afterwards went for lunch together. That was the beginning of their long friendship. Ife was very open minded and generous; she gave freely without being asked and she never questioned anyone’s motive.

Dolly became like a watchdog and prevented Ife from being the people’s mugu. She started to guard their friendship jealously and also wouldn’t allow a third party to break their bond.

After a while it became obvious that Dolly practically lived off Ife and wouldn’t let anyone spoil her rhythm. Ife never saw it that way, she was happy to have Dolly as her friend.

Ife was a lot smarter than Dolly but never missed any chance to help Dolly with her studies, she encouraged her friend to study at all times and not wait for examination period. She liked her friend Dolly a lot and wanted her to excel just as well.

By their final year, it was clear that Ife would graduate with very high grades while Dolly prayed for “let my people go” grades.

Ada and Lola would hang out with Ife sometimes and when they did, they had a lovely time; they discussed weird lecturers and their ways of teaching which always made them laugh. With Oby and Ego, they discussed boys; Ife admitted to them that she liked Ade right back. Words went back to Ade and in a short time they started to see each other. These were Ife’s other classmates.

Surprisingly, Dolly was cool with these other friends that Ife hung out with asides her. She was particularly excited that Ife was finally considering dating one of the most popular nerds on campus. Happy to have other friends in her life, Ife decided to mark her twenty first birthday with her few friends in her apartment but to her shock no one showed up but Dolly.

Ade avoided her carefully afterwards and her other friends started to act really strange, first they did not apologise and also provided no excuse for their absence. She eventually asked Ego why she never showed up but couldn’t quite understand her reason because she kept blabbing “nothing much”.

Ife was right after all and so she just stuck to her bosom friend. Sometimes Dolly e was over bearing and seemed to have a need all the time but she was still a true friend to Ife.

“You are so callous and a big gossip Ife” that was Ego to Ife on a certain day in class after their last lecture. Ife responded, “you are very stupid”. Like she was hit by a bolt of thunder, Ego started screaming and calling Dolly all sorts of names. Ife ran to her friend and pulled her away from the brawl which was quickly deteriorating.

While she took her friend away, Ego continued to yell and then she started to call Ife’s name. “ask your good friend why none of us attended your birthday get together. Dolly told their friends that Ife had confided in her that they wanted to be her friend because they all hoped to gain something from her; she told them that Ife was so sure that they wouldn’t miss her birthday for anything because it was a good chance at getting closer her.

She told Ade that Ife said he was beneath her and she wouldn’t be able to introduce her to her family. Dolly could not deny any of Ego’s accusations, she only kept asking Ego to stop talking rubbish.

Ife and Dolly walked to Ife’s car, as she drove, Ife thought over all that Ego said and knew that Dolly did say them. When they got to Ife’s tastefully furnished off campus apartment, Ife asked Dolly to pick some of her things that she had in the apartment; she passed the night there very often.

The last thing Dolly said as she left was, “Ife, I am sorry” Ife does not make friends easily and is sad about losing her one true friend.

Me: in the words of Joan Jett, You got nothing to lose, you don’t lose when you lose fake friends. Everyone has a demonic friend like Dolly in her life, Ife count yourself lucky to have uncovered yours before she did more harm.
