When Duty Calls

When I see the way modern marriages are programmed, my mind goes back to the days when our mothers were raised to recognise the man as the head of the home.

He provides everything from accommodation to feeding, school fees and funds for the general running of the home. He is responsible for every single expense.

On the other hand, the woman runs the home, cooks, cleans and takes care of the children. She ensures that every single thing at home is in order and the children do well at chool.

In the past, our fathers provided everything for our mothers except in very rare cases where the women insisted on working.

It was a thing of pride for the men to have their wives sit at home and perform wifely duties while they worked and gave the best to their families.

The most important wifely duties were cooking and serving the master and afterwards some serious sacrifices in the shrine.

So basically before a man returns from work, the wife would have taken care of the children and well settled.

The house is kept neat for the arrival of the breadwinner who will demand full attention. As soon as he arrives, every other thing becomes less important.

The wife has to listen to him tell stories about how eventful his day was over his meal, served by her, while she sits pretty beside him.

While he goes in to shower, wifey clears the table, washes the plates and then comes into the bedroom.

By this arrangement the wife gives up every right to say that she is tired when duty calls; even if she lies down there like a log of wood, her legs must spread out wide enough for slaughtering by the master.

Nothing like 'I'm tired' or 'I have a headache' or 'I'm not in the mood'. Nah...you've been well taken care of and so when it's time, you must obey. Hoha!!!

This old rule is gradually phasing out both home and abroad and rightly so.....discussion continues.....
